Explorer Foldable Solar Panel Review by G. Teruya (Honolulu, HI)

Been into Solar Chargers for the past 6 months. Interest in solar charges grew from wanting to be prepared for emergencies. The electronic devices that I have are powered through AA, AAA, and USB sources. Therefore, my focus was on finding a solar charger that can power one or any combination of the three. I was hopeful for this solar charger would be able to charge my iPhone and Sanyo Eneloop USB Battery Charger. This is the review of the Brunton 81-000009 Explorer Foldable Solar Panel.

First, this solar charger appeared to be of quality build. It is beautifully constructed with four solid and hefty polycrastalline solar panels connected to a sort of nylon material. Everything fit nicely. Keep in mind that this product has some weight in comparison to the Amorphous and CIGS style thin film solar panels. In addition, the device had a small LED light to indicate the power available and a nice USB connection. Unfortunately, this is where the positive qualities end.

Functionally, this device failed to charge or even be recognized by my iPhone and Sanyo Eneloop Charger. The Sanyo Eneloop USB Battery Charger can charge either up to two AA or AAA batteries at a time and is supposed to work with 5V of power. The solar charger also failed to charge a simple LG phone, which was even more of a disappointment. The only glimpse of hope I had was when an iPod Shuffle was first connected to the device. It started to charge for the first couple of seconds, then stopped. Keep in mind that this is under intense, full-sun.

Overall, I rate this Brunton 81-000009 Explorer Foldable Solar Panel a 1.0 out of 5.0 stars. The one star goes to the solid, quality construction of the solar panel. However, this product does not carry out its function, and is therefore given an extremely low score.

Have had this for a year now it works great if its flat and the sun is high over head.
if you are like me and Hiking-Biking while trying to charge something you may be disappointed I have had it charge the battery one day and fail to do so the next. I have to believe that the reason it did not charge was because it was not on a flat surface and will be making a light weight flat panel to attach it to on my next trip. good luck if you decide to purchase this.

I got this solar charger to use charging AA eneloop batteries and my ipod. It has a high power output and works very well with the Brunton Solo Batt Pack, charging 4 AA or AAA batteries relatively quickly. What it cannot do is charge my ipod touch. It turns out that this is because of Apple, not a flaw in the charger. For whatever reason, they made it so that you simply cannot charge a 3rd gen. touch with this charger. What I found quite by accident is that if you plug a Boxwave Ipad charging adapter (<$10) into the solar panel's usb port first, then plug the docking cable into the adapter and the ipod, it will start charging after a 30 or so second delay. You need direct sunlight, or it gives you the scolding "charging is not supported with this accessory" message and glares at you. If you don't use the adapter, it doesn't even do this much. It just ignores the solar panel altogether.

This unit has high power output, is relatively compact and allows you to charge pretty much anything that can be charged with a usb port completely off the grid.
